Former Vice-President Guingona's grandson falls to death

Martin “Mark” Guingona-Lamb, a 20-year-old grandson of former Vice-President of the Philippines Teofisto Guingona and nephew of Senator Teofisto Guingona III, died after he fell from the 31st floor of Vivere Suites Hotel in Muntinlupa City on Thursday.

Police investigators said that they were still trying to determine the real cause of his death whether Mark committed suicide or he killed himself by accident.

Before Mark fell to his death, he and his friend Miguel Enrique Munarriz went to the Skylounge of the hotel and had a bottle of beer. Munnariz told the investigators that they had talked each other to discuss Mark's personal problems but declined to tell the details.

Senator Guingona said, “We understand that Mark is young and may have been unable to bear [the] burden of such concerns. The intensity of his pain is known only to him.”
The family of Guingona declines to make further comments on the issue.

Mark Guingona Lamb was a dean's lister in De La Salle University - Manila for School Year 2009-2010, Term 2 as reflected in the document published by  the Office of the University Registrar.

PLDT acquires 51.55% equity share of Sun Cellular, Digitel Mobile Communications

There are three dominant telecommunications players in the Philippines - PLDT which owns Smart Communications, Digitel which owns Sun Cellular, and Globe Telecom which owns Globe.

Not anymore.

The Philippine Long Distance Company (PLDT) announced Wednesday that it acquired Digital Mobile Communications from JG Summit for 69.2 billion pesos (US $ 1.6 billion) making it the largest corporate buy-out in the  country's history. PLDT now owns 51.55%  equity stake of Digitel. The remaining investors represent 48.45% equity share in the Digitel.

Smart + Sun Cellular = Excellent mobile service?

Many people are hoping that this would lead to a better mobile service for both the Smart and Sun Cellular subscribers. It seems that PLDT is trying to cripple the dominance of Globe Telecom. Whoaa!

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Bishop Tagle as the new Archbishop of Manila

 Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle

The Archdiocese of Manila has a new Archbishop.

The leader of the Roman Catholic Church worldwide, Pope Benedict XVI, appointed Bishop Luis Antonio Tagle as the new Archbishop of Manila on Thursday, October 13, 2011. Before the appointment, Archbishop Tagle served as the Bishop of the Diocese of Imus in Cavite.

According to the President of the powerful Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), Archbishop Tagle “... is God’s gift to the people of Manila because he is not only a deeply religious man, he is also, despite of his youth a recognized figure not only nationally but also internationally as a theologian and as a speaker. His face and voice are familiar in the Vatican. He is a blessing to us Filipinos because we Catholics in the Philippines look up to this prime archdiocese also for leadership.

The Archbishop-elect was born in Manila on June 21, 1957. He attended his elementary and secondary years at Saint Andrew’s School in Paranaque City while he received his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy degree at San Jose Seminary.  He earned his Master of Arts in Theology at the Ateneo de Manila University and eventually earned his Doctor of Theology in the Catholic University of America.

He was a member of the Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith, a theological body of the Roman Catholic Church, in Vatican City which was headed by Pope Benedict XVI before.

Archbishop Tagle is the 32nd Archbishop of Manila making him the leader of 2.8 million Roman Catholics in Manila. He succeeded Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales.
