University of Makati is one of the universities in Metro Manila that is funded by the local government of Makati City. The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) categorized the school as LGU or Local Government University in contrast to SUCs or State Universities and Colleges such as the University of the Philippines and Eulogio Amang Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology where funds are coming from the national government. The exact location of the school is at J.P. Rizal Extension, West Rembo, Makati City.

Former mayor of Makati City, Jejomar Binay, now the Vice-President of the Philippines is commendable for his efforts in making education affordable to poor residents of Makati and other nearby cities. He is credited for making University of Makati a chartered university in 1991 during his administration. Today, the city is governed by his son, Mayor Jun-jun Binay.

University of Makati is popularly known as UMak.
